The Power of Acknowledgment
by Ben Dooley
The Wizard of Oz is one of my top ten films of all time. I always cry at the end when Dorothy's leaving and she says to the Scarecrow, "I think I'll miss you most of all." Tears. Delicious tears.
(For those of you who haven't seen it, I apologize in advance if I ruin the ending for you. It's still a magnificent film worth seeing.)
Remember at the end when the Wizard gives the Scarecrow his brains, the Tin Man his heart, and the Lion his courage?
Well, actually he doesn't really GIVE them anything. All that he really does is simply acknowledge them for what they already are possess.
(Remember? Acknowledgment is simply letting the client know you see them fully, perhaps even more than they see themselves.) The Scarecrow had to use his brains to help them out of their predicament with the Wicked Witch, the Tin Man already had shown great sympathy and heart with Dorothy being trapped (and at having inadvertently killing a bumble bee), and even the Lion displayed tremendous courage in the face of danger with those scary blue faced guards and flying monkeys. All along they possessed that which they desired most and felt they were missing. And all the Wizard did, was see it there already within then and give them a token to represent their greatness.
Finally, at the end of the film, Glinda the good witch comes floating in on her magic bubble. When asked if she could help Dorothy get home, she replies, "You don't need to be helped any longer. You've always had the power to go back to Kansas."
Astonished, Dorothy replies, "I have?"
and the Scarecrow comes quickly to her defense. "Then why didn't you tell her before?"
But Glinda, being the smart cookie that she is, simply replies, "Because she wouldn't have believed me. She had to learn it for herself."
(Boy those ruby slippers sure come in handy. I got to get me a pair of those.)
You see, that's kind of what it's like for our clients. First off, they already possess greatness, they don't really need anything new and wonderful from us, just a little help to draw it out, and then an acknowledgment (and perhaps a little something to help them remember later on, like a diploma, a testimonial or a medal, for instance).
Also, like Glinda, we may sometimes already have the "Big Perfect Answer" for our clients--one that will give them their heart's desire. But if we blurt it out too early, they may not be able to hear it and believe it. It's something they have to discover for themselves. And when they do, it's usually a powerful lesson learned--one they will most likely not forget.
And even so with you, as you continue searching down your own "yellow brick road," striving for that which you most likely already have. Sure, there's always more tips, tricks, and techniques to learn.
Friends and challenges (like obstacles, witches and poppies) to meet along the way. But really, at the end of your adventure, you'll find that you already possess that which you need to be a coach. Love. Desire. Passion. Or in other words, a Heart, a Brain, and Courage.
"And remember, my sentimental friend...that a heart is not judged by how much you love, but by how much you are loved by others.
