Review of "When Harry Met Sally" by David Terr
"When Harry Met Sally" is a wonderful romantic comedy directed by Rob Reiner and starring Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan. The movie explores the basic question - can men and women ever be "just friends?"
The movie begins at the University of Chicago in 1977, where Sally Albright meets Harry Burns, who are traveling together to New York City. The two are very different. Harry is quite outgoing and Sally is much more reserved. Harry expresses interest in Sally but she tells them they're just friends. Harry then insists that men and women can never be just friends because their sexual interests always get in the way. Sally disagrees and they part on bad terms.
Five years later, they meet again, this time in an airport, where they board a plane together. Harry sticks to his earlier conviction that they can never be just friends, in fact elaborating on it. They part on bad terms again.
Five years later they meet yet again, this time at a bookstore in Manhattan. Harry is going through a bad divorce and needs companionship. He apologizes for his previous smug attitude and they become good friends. Over the following year, they spend a lot of time together, inadvertently hooking up each of their best friends in the process.
One night, Sally calls Harry very upset, because her ex-boyfriend has told her that he's getting married. Harry comforts her and the two end up sleeping together. Afterward, they both feel very awkward about it. Their friendship nearly becomes ruined, but in the end, Harry declares his love for Sally and they end up falling in love and getting married.
The funniest scene occurs about midway through the movie, when in order to prove to Harry that women often fake orgasms without their partner knowing about it, she fakes an orgasm in Katz Deli. Afterward, and older woman tells the waitor, "I'll have what she's having!"
