The Pursuit of Happyness (2006) by Chad Stroh
The film is based on a true story set in San Francisco in 1981. Chris Gardner (Will Smith) is a smart man with only a high school education. His wife Linda (Thandie Newton) finds herself unhappy with her life and marriage after Chris invests most of their money into bone-density scanners. Chris struggles to sell the scanners which causes financial burden on the family. Soon, their son Christopher (Jaden Smith) is the only thing keeping the couple together.
Chris stumbles upon a successful man who reveals to him that he is a stock broker for a firm run by Dean Witter. Chris, looking to change his life for the better seeks an interview for an internship. He manages to arrange an interview after impressing Jay Twistle, the man who runs the internship, by finishing a Rubik's cube in record time.
Linda is frustrated to hear that Chris is sacrificing his sales to take the internship and walks out on him. She leaves Chris, taking their son Christopher with her. Wanting his son back, Chris picks up Christopher from daycare. While picking up his son, he notices "happiness" is spelled wrong on the side of the daycare.
Linda decides she to move to New York with Christopher but Chris insists on keeping their son. After arguing, Linda allows Chris to keep Christopher. However, Chris's luck turns quickly when he learns that he is being evicted. He manages to cut a deal with his landlord to re-paint the whole apartment in exchange for some extra time to come up with money. Shortly before his big interview with Dean Witter, Chris is arrested for unpaid parking tickets. After getting out of jail, he runs to his interview sweating, dirty and dressed in paint stained clothes. Out of ambition, Chris gets the interview but learns it's unpaid.
He returns home to find he has been evicted. He moves into a cheap motel with his son and manages to sell a few bone-density scanners for money. After the IRS takes the rest of Chris's money, they are forced to spend the night in a train station public bathroom. Chris turns the sad situation fun by pretending as if there were dinosaurs and the bathroom was a cave for him and Christopher to hide in.
Chris decides to put all of his energy into the Dean Witter internship, going the extra mile to attract clients. The job would be granted to one person out of 25 hopefuls. In the emotional climax of the movie, Dean Witter makes it sound as if Chris was not going to get the job before telling him he was awarded the full-time position. Chris cannot hold back his tears while he leaves the office to go tell his son the good news.
