Forum Marketing Tips to Generate Traffic to Your Website
by Lisa Oliver
With forums growing in popularity every day, it would only make sense, as an internet marketer, to want to mould this to your advantage. If you are curious about using forums to generate traffic to your website, it is important to both familiarise yourself with backlinks - also known as the process of one site linking to another - and keep the tips below in mind:
1. Locate a forum that fits the subject of your business. If you specialise in cakes and other sweets, find a forum about cooking. If you sell books, find a literary community. The key is picking a place that would be the most receptive to what you are trying to market. Joining a sewing forum to try to market car parts, for example, would be a poor choice. Once you find a forum or two that you believe would work, do some research. For example, how active is the forum? How many members are there? A forum that is rarely visited by your audience will not do you much good in terms of gaining traffic to your site, plus it's unlikely to help in terms of page ranking either, because search engines won't rate it as favourably as more popular forums which are regularly updated with fresh content.
2. Link to your website in both your signature and profile areas. These features should not be too hard to find on the forum, and take only a few minutes to set up. Make sure that your website address is written out correctly and in full (including the http:// so it is clickable), or potential customers will not be able to reach your site. Do not use bright, obnoxious colours or flashing images to try to bring it to their attention; it will only annoy forum posters, and they are less likely to take you seriously.
3. Post only helpful and informative text when on the forum. If you use every post as an opportunity to pressure people into visiting your site and buying your products, they will resent it and it will have entirely the opposite affect than what you want to achieve. You may be banned for doing this, as well, as it could be against the rules. Make sure that your forum marketing is not too obvious, and instead be a useful and thoughtful forum member. If somebody has a question, help them and perhaps tell them they can learn more at your website. Find creative ways to bring your business to their attention, but only do so on occasion.
